How To Use the Catalog

Compiled and published with a Library Services & Technology Act (LSTA) federal grant from the Institute of Museum & Library Services administered by the Library of Michigan.
***A very special "Thank you" to Billy Fountain who read some of the large print books on tape. This part of the project was a collaboration with the Marquette-Alger Intermediate School District Transitions program.  Here is the list of books he read.***

This online catalog lists children's and young adult titles with matching publications in Talking Book tape and print formats.  People with learning disabilities may help improve their reading skills by listening to the tapes while following along in the printed text.

Book titles in this catalog are listed by grade level.Following each title, you will see the Talking Book (RC) number and either the Large Print (LP) book number or the Regular Print (RP) number.

Recorded Cassettes (RC) are available from the U.P. Library for the Blind & People With Disabilities (LBPD) for anyone qualified and registered with the NLS Talking Book program.  More information on qualification and registration is available at the LBPD Web site or by contacting the LBPD staff.

Large Print (LP) books are also available from the U.P. LBPD after registration.

Regular Print (RP) books are available from school and public libraries participating in the Upper Peninsula Region of Library Cooperation's online regional catalog. Search this U.P. school and public library catalog from home, school, or your local public library at this web site: www.uproc.lib.mi.us/choice.html.  The online catalog will tell you which Upper Peninsula library owns the book you want to read.  You can either check out the book from your local public library or, if the book is located in another library, ask your librarian to "interlibrary loan" the book by mail for you.  You can pick up and return the interlibrary loan book to your local library.

Adults and children are eligible for the program if they cannot read regular print because they are:

  • Unable to read because of a learning disability resulting from an organic dysfunction, such as dyslexia

Schools, nursing homes, and other institutions with eligible students or residents are also eligible for services.

Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RBD) is a nonprofit organization with a depository collection of textbooks from grades 5 and through college.  The eligibility requirements are the same.  Playback equipment for the textbooks can be borrowed from the U.P.
