Wifi is freely available throughout the library building. Simply select the network with the best signal (usually it will be for the floor or room where you are located). A splash page will come up that will require you to click “accept” after you review and agree to our policies. If you need assistance, feel free to ask a library staff member.
Public Access Computers
The Peter White Public Library has computers in a number of locations. Printing is available. A variety of commercial software is installed, and only pre-installed software may be used. Computers may be used for three hours a day except during scheduled classes.
- The Computer Lab, located on the second floor, has eighteen computers.
- Outside the computer lab are eight more computers, plus one more by the back issues of the magazines.
- On the main floor, five computers across from the Circulation Desk. The one on the left is word processing only.
- Two internet express stations, one each on the first and second floor for 15 minutes of internet access.
- Several computers in the children’s room, including one for parents.
The Library uses CybraryN time management and print management software. This allows users to sign themselves into a computer using a library card number and PIN, and to print documents.
Cost of Use
There is no charge to use the computers for cardholders. Guest passes are offered for $2 for three hours of use for non-cardholders and visitors to the area who need more than the 15 minutes allowed on the express stations.
For your convenience, the library sells thumb drives, blank DVDs, and headphones at the reference desk for use on the computers.
Limited Library Assistance
This is a self-teaching facility. Computer users are asked to carefully read provided directions and manuals. Library assistance will generally be limited to helping new users get started and assisting with printer problems. Staff do not have complete knowledge of all the programs beyond getting started and other basic information.
A PWPL library card barcode plus a PIN is required to gain entry onto an Internet-accessible computer. PINs are computer-assigned numbers when a patron receives a new card, but may be changed by the individual patron. Visitors need a picture ID to purchase a guest pass at the Circulation Desk. The guest pass gives access to PWPL’s computers for up to three hours for the $2 charge per day.
The computers in the lab are generally available during open Library hours up to ten minutes prior to the Library’s closing. The exception is during a computer class or setup when the lab is closed to patron use. The other computers are available during these times. All public access computers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
