In the spotlight: Holiday Giving

We know first hand how generous our patrons are.  During the next few weeks we will be serving as a drop-off point for three local holiday giving campaigns.

Food For Fines:  The Library is partnering with the TV6 Canathon to help feed our hungry neighbors by serving as a collection point for food items to help stock our local food pantries from November 13 through December 6, 2017.

As an added incentive to donate, the library will be offering Food for Fines, a program that allows library users to resolve overdue fines or get a free DVD rental with the donation of non-perishable food items to the Canathon. Bring in one non-perishable food item to the library’s circulation desk in exchange for $1.00 in overdue fines or a film rental.

There is no limit to the dollar amount of fines that can be waived through Food for Fines. The program applies to overdue fines and DVD rentals only.  It cannot be used to resolve fees for lost or damaged materials.

The TV6 Canathon began in 1982 with 700 pounds of food collected.  Last year, the collection had grown to 144,500 pounds of food all of which was distributed in 10 Upper Michigan counties. The staff of the Peter White Public Library always looks forward to the continued our patrons continued participation in this event to let no one go hungry in our community.

Gift of Reading:  It’s time again for Gift of Reading project, in partnership with Marquette-Alger Reading Council, from Nov. 13 to Dec. 9. There will be a collection box for donations of new books in the lobby, along with Food for Fines and Toys for Tots.

The books that we collect, along with others collected throughout the area, will be distributed to youth service agencies, Lake Superior Village
Youth Center, public health and dental centers, nursing homes, St. Vincent dePaul’s, Salvation Army, the Veteran’s Center, Harbor House, the Women’s Center, Beacon House, and many other locations in Marquette and Alger Counties.

Toys for Tots:  Marquette’s local Toys for Tots campaign will run through December 19.  New unwrapped toys for children ages 0-12 can be dropped off on the main level during regular library hours.

Our mission: to make informational, educational, cultural and recreational materials and programs available and accessible to all library users.
