The Youth Services Department serves young people ages birth through 18 years, parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, students preparing to work with young people, and all who love children and their literature and care about our future. The Children's Area is located on the Library's lower level, across from the Community Room. The Teen Area is found on the west end of the main floor. The Youth Services Staff consists of five people (1 FT and 4 PT). Together they are responsible for selecting books, magazines and other materials for the department; developing programs for children and teen; assisting with reference and homework questions; suggesting the perfect book; helping with the Library's technology; creating departmental publicity and displays; and providing the occasional band-aide and facial tissue. The Youth Services Department offers books (both fiction and non-fiction), board books, magazines, audio books (both cassette and CD), music CDs, reference books and maps. Videos and DVDs for young people are shelved on the main floor with the adult choices. The large play area includes a train set, puppet stage, puppets, puzzles, and toys. There are computers for finding information or playing games and one computer set aside for adults who are accompanying their children. These computers offer Internet access. Study tables and chairs comfortable enough to curl up with a good book fill the room. There are three catalog computers for locating materials.
