Community Room

The Community Room at PLDL is a great place to hold your next presentation. We have a number of tables and chairs (in both youth and adult sizes) that can be arranged in a variety of formations, depending on your needs. We also have a podium, a projector, and a drop-down screen to help fulfill your needs.

Applications for use of the Community Room can be picked up at the circulation desk. The cost for an application is $1.

Computer Access

We have computers available for members of the public to use.

If you are a member of PLDL computer use is free, just bring your library card and your PIN to login. If you are not a member,  you will be charged a nominal fee of $1 and you will receive a temporary card which includes both a Library Barcode and a PIN, good for one hour of use.

Users can print materials in black & white and color from public computers and wireless devices.

There are eight computers available for adult use, four for young adults (ages 10-17), and two for children. A public computer in our Michigan room is made available for genealogy and grant research. Two of the adult computers include keyboards with larger keys, for beginning browsers.

Free wireless internet is available throughout the library building. To connect, open your wireless connection and choose “PLDLpatronaccess.” There is no username or password required at this time. If you are attempting to connect and are having trouble, please contact one of our staff members.

Interlibrary Loan

The Portage Lake District Library houses over 50,000 items for check-out, including print books, audio books, movies, and music CDs. However, if you can’t find what you’re looking for within our collection all is not lost! The library alsoprovides interlibrary loan services. This gives patrons access to millions of unique titles across many formats. How a patron requests materials from another library depends on a few different factors. See the information below for more specific instructions.

Can’t find a book in the PLDL catalog? Start your search in the UP with PII (Patron Initiated Interlibrary Loan).

The PLDL is a member of the Superiorland Library Cooperative, a collection of 55+ public and school libraries that share an ILS (Integrated Library System).

  • Step 1 – From the library’s online catalog you can search our collection. By default, your search will return items available only at PLDL.
  • Step 2 – If you’re unable to find what you’re looking for through the PLDL collection, select the drop-down menu on the far left of the screen and choose Resource Sharing Libraries. The search results returned reflect the holdings of all the libraries in the Upper Peninsula cooperative of libraries.
  • Step 3 – Click on the PLACE HOLD link in the item’s record.
  • Step 4 – Enter your library card barcode and PIN in the fields presented and click on the Log In button.
  • Step 5 – A dialogue box will pop-up and prompt you to now place the hold. Click Place Hold(s). Click Okay to close the dialogue box.
  • Step 6 – You will receive a phone call when the book arrives.

No luck with PII? Try MeLCat (Michigan-wide search).

The PLDL participates in statewide interlibrary loan through the Library of Michigan and Michigan Collaborative for Library Services. MeLCat includes both public and academic libraries, although the level of participation and materials available vary.
