E-Waste Recycling Event and Film: Death by Design: The Dirty Story of Our Digital Addiction
Posted on April 25, 2018 – 5:35 pm
The Portage Lake District Library invites the public to join the Copper Country Recycling Initiative (CCRI) and the Michigan Technological University Center for Science and Environmental Outreach for an Earth Day film screening and discussion at the library on Monday, April 30, at 6:30 p.m.
The film Death by Design: The Dirty Story of Our Digital Addiction shows the dark side of our ever growing use of electronic devices from smartphones to personal computers. In an investigation that spans the globe, filmmaker Sue Williams investigates the electronics industry and reveals how even the smallest devices have deadly environmental and health costs. From China to New York to Silicon Valley, the film tells a story of environmental degradation, of health tragedies, and the fast approaching tipping point between consumerism and sustainability.
A discussion will follow the film and information about new, state certified and secure electronic waste recycling that has returned to the Keweenaw will be announced. The Copper Country Recycling Initiative, in partnership with Goodwill Industries, MTU, and the cities of Houghton and Hancock, recently received funding from the Michigan DEQ for local electronic waste recycling. Spring and fall collection events are planned for 2018 in addition to the development of two permanent collection sites at local Goodwill stores.
People can drop off office and household electronics and computer components and accessories on Friday, May 4, from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday, May 5, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Goodwill Industries located near the Houghton County Memorial Airport. This two day event will be free of charge. Future collection events may have a minimal charge for each item. A complete list of electronic items that can be recycled is available at the library and by emailing CCRI at email@example.com
Library events are free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please call the library at 482-4570.
