Keweenaw Garden Club: Dahlias in the Keweenaw – Not Just Another Aster
Posted on March 6, 2018 – 4:14 pm
The Portage Lake District Library will host the Keweenaw Garden Club on Monday, March 19, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. for “Dahlias in the Keweenaw: Not Just Another Aster,” a presentation by Karena Schmidt, ecologist for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.
Schmidt will share a spectacular collection of dahlia images from her garden in Laurium that was featured in “Five Favorite Keweenaw Gardens” in Lake Superior Magazine. Dahlias are one of the showiest, highest-production annuals that can be grown, with varieties ranging from 1 – 6 feet tall and flowers that come in an array of colors and sizes from little pom-pom to dinner-plate. Participants will learn how to grow dahlias from local soil preparation to the winter storage and splitting of tubers.
The Keweenaw Garden Club was established by and for gardening enthusiasts. They have presentations at the Portage Lake District Library on the third Monday of each month, September through May. To learn more, visit https://sites.google.com/site/keweenawgardenclub/.
