1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
Posted on November 10, 2017 – 3:53 pm
As part of its commitment to early literacy, the Portage Lake District Library invites families to participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge.
The kick-off party for this project will be held on Saturday, November 18, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Families can sign up for the program and receive a folio that contains everything they need to get started including the first reading log sheet, book recommendations, and a bookmark. Kids can also participate in Storytime and a craft project at 11:15 a.m. and again at 12:15 p.m.
Reading out loud to pre-school aged children is one of the most important predictors of school success for children, and this self-paced, year-round program is aimed at getting children ready to read by the time they are in kindergarten. Reading 1,000 books to a child before kindergarten might sound daunting at first, but reading one book per day for three years will reach this goal.
