January 2012

The Delta County Historical Society presents the Winter Outreach Series, presented in partnership with the Escanaba Public Library.

This series has become one of the bright spots in the long U.P. winter-or, more precisely, three bright spots. The 2012 programs will again take place in the Escanaba City Hall Council Chambers, as they have for the past two winters. We have scheduled Peter Strom, Charles Lindquist and Karen Lindquist as our speakers.

Wednesday, January 18, D.C.H.S. board member and attorney Peter Strom will discuss the history of the Delta County Courthouse and the judges who have served Delta County. Peter's father, attorney Wheaton Strom, spearheaded the construction of the "new" courthouse and was the speaker at its dedication 50 years ago; Peter was the speaker at the 50th anniversary of its dedication. We will learn about the distinguished men who have served as judges since the establishment of Delta County's court system.

Wednesday, February 15, Dr. Charles Lindquist, president of the historical society, will present a talk he calls "The People Who Loved Michigan the Most: The Story of Michigan's Native Americans." Twice the people who make up Michigan's main three tribes, the Potawatomie, the Ojibway and the Ottawa, were driven out of Michigan, and twice they returned. The first time occurred in the Seventeenth Century when the Iroquois drove Michigan's native peoples away. After fighting their way back, these same peoples were driven away again in the Nineteenth Century by the United States government. Again they found their way back. This time, happily, they became a vital and permanent part of the rich mosaic of peoples who make up the population of Michigan. In this talk Dr. Lindquist will discuss the remarkable story of these three tribes and their determination to live in this land -- their homeland.

Wednesday, March 21, Karen Lindquist will take us on a photographic tour of Escanaba's neighborhoods as they looked in the 1930s. Her presentation is a complement to Rich Anzalone's popular program on the commercial areas of 1930s Escanaba offered in last year's outreach series. Karen's program will draw on photographs originally taken as part of the city assessor's tax records and donated to the historical society by Mike Quinn. Between now and March 21, you may notice Karen driving slowly around town as she tries to match the houses still standing with their seventy-five year old images. Programs will begin at 7:00 p.m., and are open to the public free of charge. Light refreshments will be served. Watch for updates and additional information in the Daily Press.

December 2011

The Escanaba Public Library will be hosting an author talk and book signing with Susan Newhof on Tuesday, December 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Escanaba City Hall Council Chambers.

Newhof, author of Michigan's Town and Country Inns published by the University of Michigan Press, will present her first work of fiction, Spirits and Wine. Part mystery, part ghost story, the novel tells the story of the chilling events set in motion when a newly married couple buys an old house in a small lakeshore town in West Michigan and makes a momentous discovery within its walls.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Escanaba Public Library and is free and open to the public. For more information, call the library at 906-789-7323.

Spirits and Wine book coverBook reviews--

"A graceful, elegantly told ghost story that is at times frightening, at times heartwarming, often quite funny, and always an engrossing and fascinating read."(Rodney Vaccaro, Emmy Award-winning Holly wood screenwriter and producer).

"A spellbinding mystery of timeless love, loss, and a house that held all the answers. I couldn't put it down." (Judith Evans Thomas, coauthor of the Born to Shop travel books)

"Spirits and Wine is a can't-put-down novel that feels less like fiction and more like sharing a glass of wine with your best friends who go on to disclose the deeply disturbing, deadly things occuring in the lovely old house they planned to restore. Susan Newhof writes truthfully and with beautiful care, evoking the icy appeal of a small lakeshore town in Michigan while revealing the wretched secrets that cling to one dwelling. After reading this harrowing tale in one sitting, I am dying to ask the author--did these menacing events really happen...to you?" (Jerrilyn Farmer, author of the best-selling Madeline Bean Mysteries)

Chrysler's Turbine Car: The Rise and Fall of Detroit's Coolest Creation 2011 Michigan Notable Author, Steve Lehto, will be at the Escanaba Public Library on Tuesday, June 7 at 6:30 p.m. for an Author Talk and Book Signing.

His new book, Chrysler's Turbine Car: The Rise and Fall of Detroit's Coolest Creation gives a detailed and in-depth analysis of the men who were behind this amazing innovation in automobile design and what happened to their dream of building a gas-turbine car.

Author bio--
STEVE LEHTO is a writer and attorney, and teaches in an adjunct capacity at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in Detroit. He lives in southeastern Michigan. He has a B.A. in history from Oakland University and a J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles. Lehto's family has roots in Upper Michigan and specifically at Suomi College. He is also the author of several other books including "Death's Door: The Truth Behind Michigan's Largest Mass Murder", "The Lemon Law Bible: Everything the Smart Consumer Needs to Know About Automobile Law" and "Michigan's Columbus: The Life of Douglass Houghton".

Chrysler's Turbine Car: The Rise and Fall of Detroit's Coolest CreationBook reviews--
This is the tale of how Chrysler's attempt to merge the jet age with the automobile's century clashed with the automaker's chronic struggle as the rockiest among Detroit's Big Three. A relevant tale for our age. (Todd Lassa, Detroit editor, Motor Trend)

Steve Lehto's lively history of Chrysler's turbine car program is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the automobile in the jet age. (David N. Lucsko, author, The Business of Speed: The Hot Rod Industry in America, 1915-1990)

At a time of skyrocketing gasoline prices and gas-electric hybrids, the world would do well to consider Lehto's loving history of the alternative-fuel engine that could run on peanuts—literally—and the car that looked good doing it. [The book] demonstrates that the best ideas don't always need to be developed; sometimes they only need to be rediscovered. (Karen Dionne, author, Freezing Point)

This is a love letter to an automobile, but it's also an obituary of progress. The Chrysler Turbine Car embodied the elegant simplicity of progress. Steve Lehto gives a fascinating account of what kills elegant simplicity: cost, of course, and corporate muddle, and, most lethal of all, government bureaucracy. (P.J. O'Rourke, political satirist, journalist, and author, Driving )

"The Women's Suffrage Movement was the largest grassroots political movement in the history of the United States - larger than the Abolition Movement, the fight for Prohibition, the Civil Rights Movements, or the agitation to end the Vietnam War. So why is it then that modern high school history books often give it passing reference or ignore it completely? This program celebrates the 90th anniversary of women having the right to vote in the United States-what it took to win this landmark victory, and how this right has been used, cherished and ignored by women since."

A former senior editor at Organic Gardening magazine, he specializes in ecology and travel writing. He grew up in a railroad family and has spent thirty five years riding trains in America. He currently teaches journalism and nature writing at Northern Michigan University and lives in Marquette, Michigan.

Library Journal- McCommons sets out to rectify American ignorance of passenger trains by describing his rail travels around the United States in 2008. He writes of the people he meets, the scenery, the long decline in American rail travel, and its emerging renaissance, interweaving discussions he has had with dozens of the leading minds on American passenger rail. Essential reading for rail fans, policymakers, and anyone curious about the future of transportation.

"Like William Least Heat Moon's Blue Highways before it, James McCommons' Waiting on a Train is a celebration of America's past and a hopeful prescription for its future. It is one of those rare books that will change the way you see the world, a fascinating and engaging tale of how this nation's infatuation with the automobile all but destroyed a once glorious passenger rail system. If you are not already a rail lover, you will be by the time you finish this book. You will want to pack your bags and hop aboard. Waiting on a Train is an important story thoroughly reported and well told." --John Grogan, author of Marley & Me and The Longest Trip Home
