From the February 2020 Library Director’s Report
February 8, 2020
We are participating in the Michigan Reads, a program funded by the Michigan Humanities Council adult book program: What the Eyes Don’t See by Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha.
“Here is the inspiring story of how Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, alongside a team of researchers, parents, friends, and community leaders, discovered that the children of Flint, Michigan, were being exposed to lead in their tap water—and then battled her own government and a brutal backlash to expose that truth to the world. … At the center of the story is Dr. Mona herself—an immigrant, doctor, scientist, and mother whose family’s activist roots inspired her pursuit of justice.” – Penguin Random House, publisher of What the Eyes Don’t See.

Michigan Ready to Read is a state wide preschool program. The Library of Michigan’s Ready to Read Michigan program encourages reading aloud regularly to children during the early stages of life (birth up to age 5), as it ensures the development of early literacy skills and instills a love of reading. The program is designed for public librarians to model early literacy skill development directly to families and engage in outreach to early childhood centers, classrooms and daycares throughout their community.” 2020’s Ready to Read Michigan book selection is A Parade of Elephants by Kevin Henkes. Coming to Glennie in March. Watch for dates and further details.
