Reference Databases extend your reach beyond the walls of the library to the shared databases of the MeL.org, Library of Michigan’s eLibrary. For genealogical research we have access to Heritage Quest (through MeL) and Ancestry Library Edition (provided in part by Chippewa County Genealogical Society) Note: Ancestry Library Edition can only be accessed from computers within the library. You may search immigration lists, census records, vital records, maps, and many other resources are available.
MeL.org also offers the Biography and Genealogy Master Index (BGMI) that indexes current, readily available reference sources, as well as the most important retrospective works that cover individuals, both living and deceased, from every field of activity and from all areas of the world. They are bibliographic citations only -- no full-text.
Other databases of interest to researchers are Digital Sanborn Maps that provides historic city maps from throughout Michigan; and Upper Peninsula Digitization Center Collections, which includes historic photographs from various U.P. institutions, including Bayliss Public Library. Go to Photographs for more information about these resources.
